School Mission
The Joint School of Public Health (JSPH) is a collaborative partnership between Old Dominion University and Norfolk State University to offer experiential learning and research opportunities across multiple campuses. The first of its kind in Virginia, students learn through hands-on experience, classroom learning, and community engagement to prepare for the public health jobs of the future.
The school’s mission is to improve the health and well-being of populations, in the Commonwealth of Virginia and beyond, through transformative education, research, scholarship, service, practice experiences and community partnerships.
Program Application, Acceptance, and Continuance
The JSPH has developed undergraduate programs that prepare individuals to meet the public health needs of the region, the state, and the nation. These programs include the Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) degree, the Bachelor of Science in Public Health – Health Services Administration (BSPH-HSA) major, the Bachelor of Science in Environmental Health (BSEH) degree, and the undergraduate Certificate in Occupational Safety.
Students entering undergraduate programs in the JSPH should meet the minimum university admission requirements (see https://www.odu.edu/admission/undergraduate).
Students who qualify for regular admission to the University and who intend to apply for admission to a public health major are considered Intended Joint School of Public Health students until admitted to their intended major. They will be assigned an advisor in the Health Sciences Advising Center/ODU Global Health Sciences while completing general education and prerequisite requirements needed to apply to their intended major. Intended Joint School of Public Health students receive individualized advising support designed to prepare them for success in their chosen public health major.

Students are eligible to continue as Intended Joint School of Public Health majors if they meet both of the following:
- Meet the continuance regulations of the University.
- Make reasonable progress toward matriculation into a Joint School of Public Health major program.
At the end of each semester (fall, spring, and summer), the Health Sciences Advising Center/ODU Online Health Sciences reviews the records of all students who do not meet minimum admissions requirements for their intended major (see admissions information in the specific program sections of the Catalog and on the program web site). A student who has ceased reasonable progress toward admission into a JSPH degree program will be notified in writing via the student's Old Dominion University e-mail address, in accordance with the Electronic Communication Policy for Official University Business.
Students who have met all major admissions requirements will be referred by their advisor in the Health Sciences Advising Center/ ODU Global Health Sciences to the appropriate program director for major declaration, program admission, and assignment to a program advisor. For additional information on the curriculum or admission requirements, please see specific program sections of the Catalog and the program web site.
Students identified as not making reasonable progress toward their intended JSPH degree program will be referred to an advisor in the Student Success Center and/or the Center for Orientation, Retention, and Exploration (CORE) for assistance in selecting a new intended major.
