OPHTHALMIC SCIENCE Courses

OPHS 301. Fundamentals of Ophthalmic Techniques. 3 Credits.

This course will train students in the basics of visual acuity, anatomy, and basic ophthalmic skills. It will cover the basic skills that will prepare the student for the first semester clinical practicum. Required for students in the ophthalmic technology program. Prerequisites: MATH 102M or higher.

OPHS 302. Clinical Practicum I. 3 Credits.

This course will encompass all clinical experiences for the first semester of the ophthalmic technology program. Prerequisites: OPHS 301 and admission to the Ophthalmic Technology program.

OPHS 303. Clinical Practicum II. 3 Credits.

This course is a continuation of clinical instruction with emphasis on applying advanced skills in visual fields, photography, and optical coherence tomography (OCT). Prerequisites: OPHS 302.

OPHS 311. Motility. 3 Credits.

Fundamental study of muscle anatomy and physiology, vision testing for infants and children, and ocular motor evaluation. Prerequisites: Admission to the Ophthalmic Technology program.

OPHS 312. Ocular Anatomy. 3 Credits.

In-depth study of the anatomy and physiology of the ocular system and medical terminology. Prerequisites: admission in the ophthalmic technology program.

OPHS 320. Optics and Refraction. 3 Credits.

Lensometry, visual function and testing, retinoscopy, refractometry, and basic optics. Prerequisites: Admission to the Ophthalmic Technology program.

OPHS 321. Visual Pathway. 3 Credits.

Manual and Automated Perimetry, visual pathway, associated lesions, glaucoma and tonometry. Prerequisite: admission in the ophthalmic technology program.

OPHS 330. Pharmacology and Systemic Disease. 3 Credits.

General technical skills, systemic disease, case histories, basic pharmacology. Prerequisite: admission in the ophthalmic technology program.

OPHS 335. Technical Skills. 3 Credits.

Advanced retinoscopy and refractometry, continuation of optics, basic contact lens fitting, photography, and introduction to fluorescein angiography. Prerequisites: Admission to the Ophthalmic Technology program.

OPHS 337. Advanced Motility. 3 Credits.

Advanced motility with sensory evaluation. Motility syndromes will be introduced. Prerequisites: admission to the Ophthalmic Technology program.

OPHS 350. Advanced Clinical Practicum. 4 Credits.

Externship and advanced clinical practicum. Advanced skills/topics to include: low vision, opticianry, ultrasonography, electrophysiology, and introduction to the OR setting Prerequisites: Admission to the Ophthalmic Technology program.

OPHS 420. Specialty Rotation I. 5 Credits.

Clinical experience. Ten-week rotation in each of the following: pediatric ophthalmology, contact lenses, low vision, ophthalmic surgical assisting, and advanced diagnostic testing. (qualifies as a CAP experience) Prerequisite: admission in the ophthalmic technology program.

OPHS 421. Specialty Rotation II. 5 Credits.

Clinical experience. Ten-week rotation in each of the following: pediatric ophthalmology, contact lenses, low vision, ophthalmic surgical assisting, and advanced diagnostic testing. (qualifies as a CAP experience) Prerequisite: admission in the ophthalmic technology program.

OPHS 422. Specialty Rotation III. 5 Credits.

Clinical experience. Ten-week rotation in each of the following: pediatric ophthalmology, contact lenses, low vision, ophthalmic surgical assisting, and advanced diagnostic testing. (qualifies as a CAP experience) Prerequisite: admission in the ophthalmic technology program.

OPHS 423. Specialty Rotation IV. 5 Credits.

Clinical experience. Ten-week rotation in each of the following: pediatric ophthalmology, contact lenses, low vision, ophthalmic surgical assisting, and advanced diagnostic testing. (qualifies as a CAP experience) Prerequisite: admission in the ophthalmic technology program.

OPHS 430. Advanced Ophthalmic Procedures and Testing Methods I. 3 Credits.

Lectures on various advanced ophthalmic procedures and testing methods for various disease processes. Prerequisites: Admission to the Ophthalmic Technology program and successful completion of OPHS 350.

OPHS 440. Advanced Ophthalmic Procedures and Testing Methods II. 3 Credits.

This course is a continuation of OPHS 430 and covers various advanced procedures and testing methods in ophthalmology. A considerable amount of time will be spent on reviewing for the required written board exam given by JCAHPO. Prerequisites: Admission to the Ophthalmic Technology program and successful completion of OPHS 430.
